PHP Trends

Came across this piece from Robert Scoble about the future of PHP.

And so the work continues ...

So the summer season ends for ERSA in October time, usually with the Tri Regions being the final race of the season. It’s good to get some downtime after that race to re-charge the batteries after a very hectic season. Traditionally not much happens visibly in ERSA during the Winter months because so many people go in different directions. It is however a good time to catch up on many things and prepare for the following season.

Links this week

Just a few interesting links from the past week and ones to watch more in the future.

This week it has been the Consumer Electronics Show, CES, in Las Vegas. It’s certainly a show I would love to attend one day and there is plenty of coverage on the Internet but here is a quick summary from the BBC. Interesting about what he says about small firms have always believed small is better and also the marketing Apple managed for free.

Be more productive

Always interesting reading articles about how to be more productive. Came across this one earlier, 7 Things Highly Productive Things People Do. Most are straight forward and make sense but the one which is actually a challenge is the checking of emails. I used to check them about four times a day but nowadays with in the type of environment I work in that is proving very challenging! Definitely something to get back into though.

2012 what will that bring?

Another very busy year ahead for 2012 both on the work front, technology and at home mainly on the skiing front (and boy is that going to be challenging this year). But here more interested in focusing on the technology front.

Last week I wrote about looking back and how much things have changed over the past decade and it is clear the pace of change will not change over the next decade, in some ways I am sure it will accelerate. In some ways I also think that the growth will not be quite so major.

Ghost Protocol

Yesterday went and watched Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and it was definitely worth seeing. In fact all the MI films are good but this one is definitely one of the better ones. Simon Pegg certainly adds a lot of good humour and adds a different dimension.

Looking back and into the Future

Every so often you read something that takes your mind back over the past decade and you realise just how much things have changed on the technology front.

Going back even further is frightening at times. I can remember a little over 20 years ago when working for a company called Pont Data for a brief period I had the fastest desktop in the company, a i386 with 12mb (yes that’s right 12mb) of RAM. I installed OS/2 using 3.5inch floppy disks, oh the fun.

DevOps

What is DevOps? I recently came across the term DevOps when reading up on a blog, at first I didn’t take much notice about it, but unfortunately I was caught out when chatting to someone in more depth and was asked about DevOps, and I didn’t really know enough about it.

Coaching Kids - The Rights and Wrongs

In the Sunday Times today there was a good article about football coaching by David Walsh. As the online version is subscription only, rather than posting all the article here I thought I would post the five Do’s and five Don’ts, while this comes from a football background it equally applies to most sports where young kids are involved, including Skiing;

Five Do’s

1. Create an environment where the emphasis is on enjoyment.

2. Allow kids the opportunity to make mistakes, it helps them learn.
